Team Leadership
*Figure out what you can be great at and create separation*
Building Leaders and Teams
Core Principles
- Trust your own work (especially when it matters most)
- ‘The Fearless Mind’ – by Dr. Craig Manning
- Not necessarily adding to game, but to drop the negative stuff
- Write down what you want to drop
- Build off what you know/are already great at
- Mile Run – 5:30min – 4 laps
- Break season into segments like 8 games
- Keep building a can-do mind set!
- Potential & Training
- Interference = Performance – Think about what could be potential interference
Create Clarity
- Leadership – To make others better
- Fun – Taking something that’s hard to do and doing it well – Example = Cal Baptist joining the WAC
- Coachable – Eye contact, Verbal or Physical cues, Honest effort to do and execute what you were just coached to do
Things to Cut Through
- False Notion – Everyone should be coached the same? NO – Players might say YES, but….
- Everyone learns differently
- Coach each of them to the best of our ability
- Difference between Agreement & Understanding
- “It’s not about agreement but an understanding”
- Define Culture in 2 words/things – Coaches and Players
- Demanding & Positive – Hit both everyday
- Want players to see this as well
Concepts
- Do you have a proactive disciplinary set in your program?
- Iron Man – 1stday training – 1stday of practice
- Build standard for players to strive
- Mark if they don’t make it
- – Gladiator – 5 Events
- Mile / Bench Press / Pull-ups / 20 suicides in 10 min / NASH (NBA Combine drill)
- No meetings / Board is tangible data in preseason
- Iron Man – 1stday training – 1stday of practice
- Create Speaking Opportunities
- 5 seniors deliver message last 5 games of season
- Lets them carry your culture
- Lets them go from critique to leader
- 5 seniors deliver message last 5 games of season
- Goal Setting
- Get to goals after you get practices under belt
- Set 3 tangible goals as a Team
- Balance between Aggression & Poise
- You can blow off steam but don’t be poisonous
- Define the line
- Lose poise – Have game plan
- Difference between Losing & Getting Beat
- There is a difference
- Don’t show up ready / weren’t emotionally ready to compete / couldn’t fight through adversity = WE LOST
- Other team out performed you / yet your guys did all they could = WE GOT BEAT
- Be a Thermostat Athlete
- Maintains temperature / dictates temperature of emotion
- Bounce Back Locker Room
- Each game is just as important as the next
- Scoreboard can’t always be beaten
- Are guys ready to handle adversity?
- Excellence Hall
- Practice Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday off the floor
- Gives coaches chance to meet with players
- Bring in guest speakers
- Shows you can prioritize academics
- Good for health of team
- How you Manage Film
- Most S/A watch film in depressed state
- You want collaboration – It won’t be with 15
- Need 7 or less for collaboration (by positions)
- Train 3/1 – 3 things you did well / 1 to get better
- Ask team to spot 3/1 and share it
- Role Definition
- Player Card – Shape their role – some are Intangible (creates clarity on within team)
- Getting Better
- When you get to season, do not complain about talent
- How do we get this guy better?
- How do we put this guy into position to be successful?
- Steal everything you can & make it your own
- Demonstrate the things that are getting better everyday on & off the court
- Recruiting
- If guy doesn’t have an offer, he’s not being recruited
- Not just a phone call or letter, but an OFFER – player needs to know the difference
- Keeps player/team together
- Strip away the extra things
- Keep things consistent & don’t add things as season progresses
