“Full Court Press”: PhD Hoops Virtual Coaches Roundtable Notes (June 19, 2020)
1. How many of you use a full court press with your program? What is your preferred Man press? What is your preferred Zone press? Trap or no trap within the presses? |
*1-3-1 Full Court and 1-3-1 Half Court – easier with responsibilities (trap half court line, corner after pass) |
*2-2-1 Tempo (3/4 court) with traps at half court and after first pass in corners |
*Man to man (straight man and no traps or run and jump when you see the back of jersey, off pass) |
*Know your personnel but if you do press, practice it and reinforce rules/principles
|
2. Scenarios: Which press do you use… |
A. After made basket… man to man, 1-2-2 zone press, 2-2-1, anything because more time to set up |
B. After missed basket… depends on experience, hard to organize (mostly half court or 1/4 court) |
C. After free throws… depends on make or miss, change it up (tempo) |
D. On dead balls… change up the look (tempo), man to man trap off the first pass, or speed dribble
|
3. How much time do you spend preparing/practicing your press(es)? |
*Depends on the time of the season… beginning of season spend more time on angles, traps, rules |
*Approx. 20-30 minutes each practice teaching and game situations, reinforce rules, angles, traps |
*If playing a team you can press more then more time in practice, if not, less time in practice
|
4. What are the basic principles of your press (first things you teach)? |
*Whole – Part – Whole concept (show film of teams running the press) |
*Angles, Passing lanes, Force offesne to go east and west, Know what you’re in when broken down |
*Split floor in half (ball side vs help side)… use the boundary line/half court line as a defender |
*Depends on purpose of the press… control pace vs trying to create turnovers/score off the press
|
5. What language does your team use (words, terminology, position names, etc.)? |
*1-3-1 (13 Fire means trap off of it, Ice means no trap out of it) |
*Keep it simple and keep it consistent so players are on the same page |
*Mostly numbers system but some coaches use picture/white board system |
*Calling it a name will give players something to identify with “havoc” or “chaos” for run and jump press
|
6. How do you set up your breakdown drills in practice to become better at your press(es)? |
*Herd Drill – Half court, keep offensive player pinned to one side of court, use angles, communicate |
*Shell Drill – ball side, help side principles (one pass away is deny, two passes away is help side) |
*50 Passes Drill – half court, can’t dribble, each pass is worth 1 pt, have to score in paint, layup = 5 pt (run your offense, set screens, pop, cut back door, etc… keep moving)
|
*EXTRA STUFF |
*San Antonio Spurs Video Clips “Beautiful Game” (sharing the ball and involving everyone) |
*Half Court Rules: 1. Apply ball pressure 2. No middle penetration 3. Contest shots 4. Always give help |
5. Help the helper 6. Draw charges 7. Possession isn’t over until rebound or turnover |
*Highlight charges (most unselfish play in basketball, winning play) |
*Joseph Dix – Collins Hill High School (GA) “Run and Jump Press” |
