Larry Hunter: “Post Play” 2006 Clinic Notes
*Doesn’t have Team Goals – Has STANDARDS
*Makes his players do 20 push-ups every day after Stretching
- DRILLS
- Positioning Drill (two players)
- With butt on defender, offensive player has feet and elbows wide (looks similar to blocking out) while defender is trying to get the ball
- 20 Mikans
- Take ball out of net w/ hands over head
- Again, but throwing ball high off the glass (above the square)
- Reverse Mikans (still taking ball out of net w/ hands over head)
- Reverse again, but high off the glass (above the square)
- Take ball out of net w/ hands over head
- Backboard Slams
- Focus on the inside foot being the pivot
- With two hands, slam ball onto backboard 4x (slam dunk the 5th one)
- Jump Hook (for Bigs & Guards)
- On the way up, tuck the ball in next to head (similar to chinning it) and extend arm to shoot while opposite arm protects
- Start drill w/ a coach either simply throwing it up for player to grab OR player plays tug-of-war with another player before entering drill
- Then, tuck ball in next to head and shoot jump hook
- Superman (Block to Block)
- Start drill by jumping to touch the rim
- Touch rim in between each move (chin it and make move)
- Foul Line to Foul Line
- Post throws off glass and outlets
- Perimeter passes to player downcourt
- Post must spring to other foul line and make move to score
- Outlet and do it again
- Hand Targets
- Throw high/Catch, pop, and chin it
- Throw low/Catch, pop, and chin it
- Positioning Drill (two players)
- DETAILS
- Make passes “On Time, On Target” right into the shooting pocket so you don’t take your teammate out of shot
- Coach should designate ‘Air’ or ‘Bounce’ passes into the post (choose one or the other). If a player throws the other pass, then they should call it out.
- There are no BAD passes — Make it a GOOD pass
- Throw ball away from the Defense
- Post w/ your feel parallel to Defender’s feet
- SUCCESS RATES:
- 40% = Making moves outside lane line
- 90% Catching and Scoring in paint by rim
- Lane Line Lob = When throwing from lane line extended (at top of key), throw to the corner of the backboard
- “Do your work before the ball arrives.” – Angles & Pins
- Look before you step so you don’t charge = Use the ‘pre-drop step’ where you look for a split second before you drop step
- Keep your feet active, offensively and defensively
- Power/Crab Dribble = Dribble under crotch w/ head on a swivel
- e.g., Right hand = fingers inside left knee
- e.g., Left hand = fingers inside right knee
