“Navigating As A Coach Through A Pandemic”: PhD Hoops Virtual Coaches Roundtable Notes (July 10, 2020)
1. As we navigate through these unprecedented times, how are YOU doing with all the uncertainty and unpredictability happening right now? |
*Keeping a solid routine each day (waking up early, eating well, exercising, focused on goals, etc.) |
*Mental Health – reading material and motivational material to stay in a positive mindset |
*Worry about controlling the things we can, not worrying about the things that are out of our control
|
2. How are you keeping players motivated during this time? |
*Zoom/Google Meetings – staying in touch, interaction, keeping a positive mindset throughout |
*Sharing reading/motivational material to keep the players focused on individual and program goals |
*Build off previous season, use it as motivation going forward, only worry about what you can control
|
3. How is your staff functioning and what type of things are you doing to improve/prepare for the upcoming season? How are you getting better as a person/team? |
*Try and connect with teammates, friends, coaches/re-connect with people who you haven’t seen |
*Focus on a new idea, skill, etc. that you can work on during Covid/come out of it a better invididual |
*Show video clips on offense, defense, transition, motivation clips to reinforce team goals
|
4. College/Pro – How are you recruiting right now? |
*Varies from state to state – some places are open in recruiting at tournaments but some are shut down |
*Most places are in contact but waiting opportunites to see tournament play or in person workouts |
*Recruiting window has been extended so it helps coaching staffs to stay on schedule
|
5. For all non-professional levels, the reality of school being “online-only” this upcoming academic semester is REAL. Does this change the possibility of there being a season? |
*It is very real…. Even though this is possible, carry on as if there is a season to keep players focused |
*Some conferences are canceling/delaying/in-conference competition only
|
6. Overall, how different will you function in the Fall compared to years past? How does the concept of Player Development change? |
*Multiple plans will be in place…. 1. Full go… 2. Modified workouts… 3. No workouts, etc. |
*If Modified workouts… lower number of players, less equipment, more invidudal/pair work |
*If No workouts… zoom/google meets, use film, YouTube as resource for players to stay in game shape |
*If No workouts… make sure players have some access to court/workout area so they can improve
|
7. Do you worry about your position being cut or eliminated, laid off, furloughed? |
*Absolutely… it is a real possibility so you need to prepare for the situation if it does happen |
*This is another situation that is out of our control so to stay focused on the job is priority
|
*EXTRA STUFF |
*PHASES – temp check by trainer, workout invdidually or with housemates only, open up slowly |
*LOGGING – keep track of any symptoms, who you have been around, any traveling, etc. |
