Coach Randy Brown – Former Division 1 Coach, Elite Coach Mentoring
10 ANCHORS
- Concept of 90%
- 90% of the game we play is without the ball.
- Teaching Communication
- The #1 thing that coaches complain about is that their team does not talk.
- Teaching basketball is seen as a puzzle not a series of drills
- Basketball needs to be seen as all of the drills that players are doing, will all fit together.
- The Words We Use
- Make a list of terminology and make sure your players know what each word means.
- Toughness
- Define the word ‘toughness’ for yourself and your program, and make sure that everyone knows what you mean when you say it.
- Roles
- Use roles to empower your players, utilize what they CAN do without bringing up what they CAN’T
- The Top 3
- Your list of 3 things that are your most valued, your non-negotiables.
- The Rule of Sticky
- Making sure your non-negotiables are permanent with your players and they know what they are.
- 3 Layers
- Talked about
- Emphasized
- Non-negotiables
- Coach Yourself
- Having players be more accountable for them and their teammates, without having to rely on their coach to catch them doing something wrong.
- Teach how to foul less, Foul Profile
- We must teach, “how not to foul” in certain situations and not just talk about it.
Other Notes –
- What is the first thing to teach?
- Eye contact and intentional listening
- You must develop YOUR brand.
- 3 Keys
- Challenge
- Apply the challenge to yourself and see if you are ready for it
- Why
- Essential to understand the WHY in everything that is done
- Replicate
- Everything that is done is a slice of the pie, and each slice makes up the whole
- Challenge
Quote (when talking about coaching): “There are no answers, only philosophies.”
Thoughts – Coach Brown provided a lot of great insight on a lot of things that I had not even thought about before. The concept of 90% is something that I feel like coaches should utilize more, because there is only 1 ball on the court yet there are 5 guys to work with that. I have always believed that not 1 person has all of the correct answers when it comes to coaching, but the quote from Coach Brown took me back a little bit. I think that brings out the importance of being bought in to team concepts but also being coaches that know how to adapt when it is needed.
