“Simple & Effective Half-Court Offense”: PhD Hoops Virtual Coaches Roundtable Notes (July 3, 2020)
1. What kind of half-court offense do you run (Sets, Motion, Continuity, etc.)? |
*Princeton style, cuts, read and react, (Euro Motion) |
*3 out, 4 out, 5 out Motion Offenses depending on personnel and opponent weaknesses |
*Ball Screen Offenses (reads, switches, take advantage of mismatches) |
*Set plays out of motion offenses to make them look similar to start, counters off of set plays
|
2. What is your philosophy on spacing (5 out, 4 out/1 in, 3 out/2 in, etc.)? |
*Need to be versatile and able to adjust to personnel based on opponent/scouting… score off break first |
*Spacing needs to be defined early and reinforced throughout season/off-season |
*”Offense is spacing and spacing is offense.” -Chuck Daly |
*Know your personnel and put them in the best position for success, paint touches, ball reversals
|
3. What are the basic rules to your offense (aka, what are your offensive principles)? |
*Need to have paint touches before long range or mid-range shot |
*Jump stops into paint area to draw defense and force scramble mode |
*Ball reversals increase shot percentage and forces defense to dig in for extended period of time |
*”Great” shot over a “good” shot… define a “great” shot to your players
|
4. Everyone says they run “Motion”… but that means something different to everyone. What are your simple rules to your “motion”? |
*Spacing – catch and play off the 3 pt line, not on or inside, use tape to help understand |
*Show the break and how to get into your “motion” offense out of the break |
*Backdoor action, screening on the weakside to create movement and open up gaps |
*Use best shooter as a decoy at times to open up others and occupies defense
|
5. If you were to start fresh in a new program, how would you run your offense? |
*Tailor it to your personnel and best fit for program success (evaluate players before implementing) |
*Getting to the FT line wins games and creates easy points |
*30 out, 4 out, 5 out motion offenses and “Horns” sets out of 30 motion set |
*Teach the skills (pump fake, jump stop, pivot to pass, etc.) within your offense to be efficient
|
6. How do you go about adjusting your offense when your roster doesn’t fit the ideal personnel? |
*Adding or subtracting offensive sets througout the season or offseason |
*Adapting if you sustain injuries or team not experiening success early/during the season |
*Keep teaching the principles of motion sets (curls, back doors, jump stops, pump fakes, etc.) |
*Show film of other teams or own team running offensive sets to highlight positives and negatives
|
*EXTRA STUFF |
*Teacher ~ Ignites… Leader ~ Shows… Caretaker ~ Develops |
*4 out, 3 out, Pass/screen away, Flex, UCLA, Read and React, Dribble/Drive |
*Offensive Philosophy – Define good shots/great shots, Player and ball movement, Have counters, Benchmarks, Intuitive |
*EIGHT OR GREAT shot within your offense (First 8 seconds of shot clock, or great shot, not good shot) |
*FACES: Fundamentals – your hard skills… Actions – cut, screen, penetrate, post up… Concepts – DHO, On-ball screens, Princeton, Blocker-mover, Horns, S-T-S, Triangle… Execution… Small-sided games |
*STAR: Spacing (tape the floor), Timing (without ball, no dribbles), Angles , Rhythm |
*Yellow Light Theory – either give a red light or green light…. Yellow causes confusion/loss of confidence |
