Skip Prosser: “Rebounding” 2006 Clinic Notes
- Spend 5-10 minutes per practice specifically on rebounding
- You can’t punch anyone, so use Rebounding as a way to show your toughness!
- Every team and coach has an identity (he needs to watch 10 minutes of any practice to
know what it is) - ”Most teams get 1 shot. Good teams get 2 shots. Really good teams get 3 shots. But, State
Champions get 4 shots.” - Use a Big Ball for EVERY rebounding drill
DRILLS AT ½ COURT (2 minutes each)
- “Tug of War w/ Ball”
- Go 1 on 1 w/ ball starting on floor at half-court = Shows Toughness!
- “Butt to Butt”
- Go 1 on 1 w/ each player boxing the other out – “Drive him out!”
- Defensive rebounding drill where the lower guy always wins
- Go 1 on 1 w/ each player boxing the other out – “Drive him out!”
- “Rip”
- Coach throws ball up 6 inches
- Player catches it, rips it, & chins it
- “Circle Block Out”
- Go 2 on 2 w/ the ball on floor at half-court (defensive players on circle facing the ball and offensive players a step behind the defense)
- Coach yells “Go” and the offense tries to go get the ball
- Defense must stay in stance blocking out for 3 seconds
2 MINUTE DRILLS
- “Manhattan”
- 1 coach shooting/3 players rebounding
- Coach shoots an outside shot
- The players must box each other out, rebound, & finish (“To the Rim!”)
- “2 on 2 Cross Blockout”
- Go 2 on 2 w/ the defenders on the blocks and offense on the wings
- Coach shoots an outside shot
- The defenders must cross and block out the opposite wing
- Block out until the ball bounces to the floor
- “3 on 3 Rotate to Blockout”
- Go 3 on 3 w/ the defenders on both blocks and the free throw line
- Offense starts on the wings and top of key
- Players rotate either clockwise or counter-clockwise (coaches decision) to blockout
- “Chop”
- Go 3 on 3 w/ defenders lined up between rim and free throw line
- Offensive players are on wings and top of key
- Coach is out of bounds behind the baseline
- Defense starts drill by chopping their feet and a close out to their designated man when coach passes to an offensive player
- Offensive player shoots a 3-pter and all defenders must find a man and block out until the ball bounces to the floor
- “Box the Shooter”
- Go 3 on 3 (the wings and top of key)
- Offense can pass, shot fake, or take 1 dribble if they want to
- On the shot, defenders must box their man!
- “Rebound Reader”
- 1 defender in middle of paint/3 shooters on wings and top of key/2 more offensive players on the blocks
- The 3 offensive players around the perimeter pass to each other
- On the shot, the defender reads where the rebound will go and boxes out accordingly depending on who shoots
- Shooter at top of key = block out the shooter
- Shooter on right wing = block out offensive player on left block
- Shooter on left wing = block out offensive player on right block
4 MINUTE DRILLS
- “Knicks” (Physical w/ a lot of contact)
- Go 2 on 2 w/ defenders on blocks and offensive players on elbows
- Coaches on wings as shooters
- On the shot, the defenders block out player on same-side elbow (1 min)
- Switch offense & defense (1 min)
- On the shot, the defenders cross to block out opposite elbow (1 min)
- Switch offense & defense (1 min)
- “Connecticut”
- Must have 3 straight def. rebounds to get out without your man touching it
- 3 on 3: Defenders on blocks/FT line while offense in corners/top of key
- Yell to offense, “Keep him in there!” — ‘Had a player in for a month’
- New offensive players constantly on every shot
- Guys love it!
- “Rebound by the Numbers” (Good for zone defense)
- 2 defenders on blocks/5 offensive players numbered 1-5 around perimeter
- Defense is chopping feet
- Coach shoots and calls out two numbers for defenders to block out
- Rotate clockwise
- 2 defenders on blocks/5 offensive players numbered 1-5 around perimeter
10 MINUTE DRILLS
- “War”
- 5 on 5, Don’t call a lot of fouls, Do this at least 1 time per day
- All defenders start w/ two feet in the lane (offensive players outside paint)
- Goal = Keep offense from getting both feet in lane — AT LEAST get a hand on the ball!
- PG gets back after shot, so his defender finds the MOST dangerous player to help
- POINTS:
- Defensive Rebound = No points, but get transition break (switch after transition)
- Offensive Rebound = Get 1 point, plus more points if score
OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING (Especially the day before a game)
- Likes to send 4 guys to the glass if can
- Don’t run to ‘a back’! No Velcro (aka, stick to ‘a back’)!
- Find a way to get to the glass
- Spin however any way (baseline or middle)
- Put a defender on a block w/ offensive players lined up on same-side wing (or across baseline to corner)
- Coach tosses the ball up near the goal from opposite wing (or off backboard if offensive players on baseline)
- Offensive player spins, catches, chins it, and finishes
- Last Resort = If stuck behind, then offensive player should push defender w/ legs to the goal and with hands up
- Put a defender on a block w/ offensive players lined up on same-side wing (or across baseline to corner)
- Be unforgiving about Rebounding! Punish immediately if a player doesn’t rebound in ANY
drill throughout practice. - Award = Horse of the Week!
- Never blame the kids! Then, you stop growing as a coach.
